Government’s insensitivity on nuisance petroleum taxes the cause of our sufferings – Dr. Kwabena Duffuor

The Coalition of Commercial Transport Owners and GPRTU of TUC embarked on a nationwide sit-down strike to express their concerns about the increasing fuel prices in the country on Monday 6th December 2021. According to the Coalition, the government for the past two weeks has failed to consider their calls for some taxes levied on petroleum products to be abolished hence the decision to embark on the sit-down strike.

Many Ghanaians reacted to their strike when pictures of people walking to their workplaces began to flood social media.

In reacting to the agitations of Ghanaian workers on Monday, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, former Finance Minister and an aspiring presidential candidate of the NDC party for the upcoming 2024 general elections took to his Facebook page and share his feelings about the mass suffering of Ghanaians as a result of the increasing fuel prices in the country.

He wrote; “The public transport crisis is a testament to the insensitivity of the government’s nuisance taxes on petroleum products and their inconsistency with the reality of Ghanaians now. Resolutions must be reached today. Ghanaians cannot wake up to this tomorrow.”

However, in the noon hours of Monday 6th December 2021, the leadership of GPRTU of TUC released a presser to call off the strike after the government’s intervention. A portion of the release said, “Leader of the Union had been invited to the Presidency during the course of the day.”
