Lassa Fever outbreak: Wear your nose mask and adhere to safety protocols – GMA

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has issued a warning to healthcare providers and the public to strictly adhere to infection prevention and control protocols to prevent the spread of Lassa Fever, a viral illness that has infected 13 people and caused one death in Ghana.

The virus is transmitted through contact with food or household items contaminated with the urine or feces of mice, or through direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated items of an infected person.

“The virus spreads to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated with the urine or feces of mice. It also spreads from one person to the other through direct contact with bodily fluids e.g. urine, blood, feces or contaminated clothes and beddings of an infected person”, as stated in the association’s statement.

The GMA emphasized the importance of adherence to IPC protocols and the use of personal protective equipment, including facemasks, gloves, and frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizers.

They also urged their members to ensure that other care team members comply with the safety protocols to prevent the spread of the disease. Severe cases of Lassa Fever can result in bleeding from various parts of the body and may lead to dire consequences if proper precautions are not taken.
