Award-winning freelance journalist and anti-corruption campaigner, Manasseh Azure Awuni has expressed profound disappointment in President Akufo-Addo over his corruption fight, stating that the President’s image as incorruptible and no-nonsense prior to the 2016 election was a well-packaged lie.
In an open letter addressed to Joyce Bawa Mogtari, who had claimed that Ghanaians have regretted voting out the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he has no regrets at all voting out the NDC just that President Akufo-Addo has turned out to be a disappointment with regards to the fight against corruption.
“Three years later, I am disappointed in the alternative. The “incorruptible and no-nonsense” personality of Akufo-Addo turned out to be a well-packaged lie. That personality turned out to be a poisonous bait some of us swallowed hook, line, sinker, and rod, without questioning because we were too hungry for change.
But do not I regret voting out John Mahama,” portions of the letter read.
Mr. Azure Awuni is of the opinion that the claim by Joyce Bawa Mogtari who is a special aide to former President Mahama is untenable and that if the NDC wants to win back power, they must realize that they made a mess of themselves and say how different they will be.
However, he praised the John Mahama era for its tolerance for persons critical of its corruption record while calling out the current administration for his hostility towards anti-corruption crusaders and activists.
“The only notable difference between the presidency of John Mahama and that of Nana Akufo-Addo is the fact that the atmosphere has become hostile under Nana Akufo-Addo for people who are unsatisfied with the corruption and speak about it or act against it.
The Danish Ambassador to Ghana said last week that the international community was concerned about how institutions and individuals fighting against corruption in Ghana were being fought.
John Mahama’s strongest leg in the next election is his high level of tolerance…” he pointed out.
