Resign if you can’t use old register for 2020 elections – IMANI’s Bright Simons to EC Boss

Technologist and Vice President of policy think tank Imani Ghana Bright Simons has held that the Director of Elections at Ghana’s Electoral Commission ( EC), Dr Serebuor Quaicoe, should resign if he can’t run the 2020 general elections with the existing voter register, adding that there are many who are willing to take up his job.

Mr. Simons contends that his insistence on compiling a new voter register for the elections even in the midst of a global pandemic amounts to holding the country hostage.

Mr. Simons has, on countless occasions, argued against the compilation of a new register given that the existing register is fit for purpose, stressing that expending scarce resources to compile a new register amounts to a waste of resources.

But the EC has been adamant, arguing that a new register is indispensable for the conduct of credible presidential and parliamentary elections later this year.

Dr Quaicoe has recently stated that even though the current global scourge of the coronavirus bars large gatherings, the EC shall go ahead with compiling the new register if it is given the green light by medical experts at the helm of fighting the pandemic.

The NDC’s Felix Kwakye Ofosu has argued that such an insistence is because the NPP wants to be able to manipulate the the electoral roll to its advantage.
