Sam George sacks Osafo-Maafo’s son, Kwadwo Osafo-Maafo from NCA

Accra, Ghana – February 14, 2025 – The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has relieved Kwadwo Gyamfi Osafo-Maafo of his position as the Director of Cyber Security at the National Communications Authority (NCA).

A letter dated February 14, 2025, signed by Chief Director Alexander Yaw Arphul, officially communicated the termination, instructing Osafo-Maafo to hand over his responsibilities to Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, the newly appointed Acting Director General of the NCA.

“I wish to inform you that the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations has terminated your appointment as the Director of Cyber Security of the National Communications Authority effective immediately,” a portion of the letter stated.

As per the terms of his appointment, Osafo-Maafo will receive three months’ salary in lieu of notice, as outlined in paragraph 8 of his engagement letter.

End of a Seven-Year Tenure

Osafo-Maafo had led the Cyber Security Division at the NCA since August 2017, overseeing Ghana’s cyber resilience strategies for seven years and seven months. His experience and contributions in the field were documented on his LinkedIn profile, confirming his extensive tenure at the Authority.

A New Era Under Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko

This leadership change follows President John Dramani Mahama’s decision in January 2025 to appoint Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the new head of the National Communications Authority.

Before his new role, Fianko served as the Director of Engineering at the NCA, where he played a key role in shaping the country’s digital infrastructure. His extensive background in telecommunications is expected to drive new policies and enhance regulatory oversight at the Authority.

With this transition, the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations is signaling a renewed focus on cybersecurity and regulatory advancements to strengthen Ghana’s digital space.
