Top Waakye joint in Kumasi you must know
Top Waakye joint in Kumasi you: Waakye is one of the hottest local delicacies in Ghana. It is prepared with rice and beans with a special grass that gives its unique color.
Most Ghanaians prefer eating it in the morning as a breakfast or in the afternoon as a lunch. It is best prepared by the Hausa natives as it is believed to be a common rice dish in the Northern region of Ghana.
You can’t do waakye or awaakye (as some people call it) without adding ‘shitor’ (chilli pepper sauce) and ‘wele’ (cooked spicy hide).
We took some time off to scavenge the central business district of Kumasi (Adum) to find out the best waake/awaakye joint. We finally found one in front of the EMS office at the Central Post office. Oh my God, this waakye is yummy!
If you don’t go there very early in the morning, you will meet a non-terminating queue of buyers. Although it tastes super yummy, it’s as well incredibly affordable. With as little as GHC5 you can be satisfied if you know how to combine the ‘additions’, that is the wele, salad, taalia, gari, nantwi nam, fish, and the others.
The next time you visit Kumasi, just drive straight to Adum Central Post Office in front of the EMS office, opposite Poku Trading Super market and ask of Hajia Waakye, they are under a tree right in front of the post office, you’ll come back here later to thank me.
