How to renew your National Health Insurance using USSD Code and Mobile Money
Have you been to a hospital trying to use your National Health Insurance and you were told that the insurance has expired? You may be in dire need of health care at that particular moment, but your card has refused to be validated because it has expired. Well, the National Health Insurance Authority has thought about this and has developed a new USSD code *929# to help patients renew their insurance instantly.
The National Health Insurance Scheme was introduced in the year 2003 during President J.A Kufuor’s term of office. A special body called National Health Insurance Authority was enacted under the National Health Insurance Act 2003, Act 650 to oversee the running of the Insurance scheme.
The authority since 2017 has introduced a simple shortcode that allows everyone with a national health insurance card to easily renew their insurance.
To renew your insurance using the shortcode, follow these steps:
- Dial *929# to pen a prompt
2. Select option 2 (Renew Membership) and press SEND
3. Select card type; enter option 1 to choose NHIS CARD and press SEND
4. Enter your 8-digit NHIS card/membership number.
5. Confirm the NHIS card/membership number and press SEND
6. Now follow the payment instructions to complete the renewal.
After successful payment through mobile money, the card is automatically renewed, and re-activated, and can be used to acquire health service right away.
