Accra, Ghana – 5 March 2026 – MultiChoice has announced plans to discontinue its streaming platform, Showmax, marking a major shift in the company’s digital entertainment strategy.
In a notice sent to customers on Thursday, the MultiChoice Group confirmed that the board has taken a decision to wind down the Showmax service following what it described as a “comprehensive review” of the platform’s future.
The company said the decision forms part of a broader effort to strengthen its overall digital offering and ensure long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive global streaming market.
Despite the announcement, MultiChoice reassured subscribers that the service will continue operating for now and that there will be no immediate disruption to current streaming access.
“At the moment there will be no interruption to your current service. You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time,” the company said in the statement.
MultiChoice acknowledged that the news may raise concerns among Showmax users and promised that customers would receive advance notice and clear guidance before any final shutdown takes effect. The company added that it is working on transition plans to ensure a smooth process for subscribers.
While the exact timeline for discontinuation has not yet been announced, the company emphasised that streaming remains a central part of its long-term strategy. MultiChoice said it will continue investing in premium content, technological innovation, and strategic partnerships to enhance its digital entertainment offerings.
Launched to compete with global streaming platforms, Showmax has been one of Africa’s major home-grown streaming services, offering a mix of local productions, international series, and sports content. The platform has played a key role in expanding on-demand entertainment across Africa.
Industry analysts say the move signals increasing pressure in the streaming sector as regional platforms compete with global giants such as Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video.
MultiChoice has not yet disclosed what alternative services or platforms may replace Showmax, but further updates are expected in the coming months.
For now, Showmax subscribers can continue using the platform as usual while awaiting additional communication from MultiChoice regarding the next steps.
