Top 5 achievements of Nana Akufo-Addo

Top 5 achievements of Nana Akufo-Addo: Ghanaians are going to the polls on December 7, 2020, to elect a new government. Major political parties in the country are gearing up despite the insurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic to face-off in the December presidential and parliamentary polls.

President Akufo-Addo who is the leader of the party in government, the New Patriotic Party has been acclaimed by the party’s National Executive Council to serve as the presidential candidate for the party in the upcoming elections.

President Akufo-Addo won power against the former President John Mahama in the December 2016 elections when the former won with close to a million votes margin coupled with the majority seats in parliament.

Prior to the December 2016 elections, the New Patriotic Party led by Nana Akufo-Addo with his Vice Dr. Bawumia made several manifesto promises based on which Ghanaians voted massively for them to win the elections.

Upon careful research on those promises made, Accra Mail has found the following Top 5 achievements to give Nana Addo and NPP one-touch victory in the upcoming 2020 elections.

1. Implementation of the Free Senior High School Education Policy:

On page 107 of the 2016 Manifesto of the NNP, the party promised that: “The NPP will redefine basic education to include Senior High School (SHS), covering vocational, agricultural and technical schools, and make it available for free on a universal basis to all Ghanaians”.

his promise being so dear to the President got funding and launched in September 2017. It started with first year students and currently, all students in Ghana’s public Secondary schools are benefitting from this laudable educational policy. More testimonies have been received from parents and students regarding how the Free SHS policy has had a life-changing impact on them.

This fulfilled promise is in no doubt a strong point to win more votes for Nana Akufo-Addo and NPP in the coming elections.

2. One District One Factory (1D1F) Initiative

The One District One Factory initiative has been one of the most discussed promised policy of the NPP government in the media among political divides. The party in its 2016 manifesto on page 31 promised to “collaborate with the private sector, to implement the “One District, One Factory” Initiative. This District Industrialization Programme will ensure an even, spatial spread of industries”.

The party in assuming power in January 2017 created a special office dedicated to the take-off of this buoyant initiative in the country. Currently, several of these factories have been completed with some still at the various stages of completion.

In searching for evidence of the successful implementation of this promise, we found a couple of them completed and currently manufacturing products that are being sold in the Ghanaian market

One of these factories is the Ekumfi Pineapple Factory, which is currently producing pineapple juice for the local and the global markets.

The Trade Minister, Mr. Alan Kyeremanteng in a media briefing confirmed that 181 factories under the 1D1F initiative are under the various stages of completion.

With the completion of these factories, Ghana will gain economically, and we believe that the successful implementation of this initiative promised by the government which is offering jobs and livelihoods to thousands of Ghanaians is a strong factor to win massive votes for the NPP government in the 2020 elections.

3. Zongo Development Fund policy

The party in its 2016 manifesto on page 66-67 promised to introduce Zongo Development fund to help develop the Zongo communities in the country.

“The NPP Zongo policy is aimed at developing these communities in order to unleash their potentials to become centres of opportunity. In this direction, we will establish the Zongo Development Fund (ZDF) to invest in:

a. education and training within the Zongos
b. improved infrastructure in the Zongos targeting health and sanitation
c. supporting local businesses and centres of culture and arts, and
d. community policing and security” (p. 67 of NPP 2016 Manifest).

Upon assumption of power, President Nana Akufo-Addo created the Ministry of Inner City and Zongo Development to ensure the successful implementation of this policy.

After searching through the implementation status of this promise we found out that several projects have been completed under this policy with several others still ongoing.

These projects are having positive impact on the dwellers of the Zongo communities in the country and we believe that families and all the people living in these communities will be influenced by these initiatives when casting their votes in the upcoming 2020 elections.

4. Restoration of Trainee Teachers and Nurses Allowance

The allowances paid to teachers and nurses studying in the various Colleges of education and health was introduced in the 1960s by Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah with the main objective of motivating students to undergo such voluntary profession to serve mother Ghana. However, in 2014, the then NDC government scrapped the policy and replaced it with Student Loan policy. The allowance benefits thousands of trainee teachers and nurses across the country.

NPP in the 2016 campaign saw the need to reintroduce the allowance policy if Ghanaians vote them into power. Their promise to reintroduce this stipend policy received several backlashes from the then incumbent party NDC and other Civil Society Organizations in the country but the then candidate Nana Addo stood by his promise as stated on page 118 of their manisfesto.

Indeed the trainee allowance was restored as promised in the first year of his reign. This was celebrated by thousands of trainee nurses and teachers across the country.

It is obvious that these trainee nurses and teachers will vote for the NPP government to protect the continuous payment of their allowance.

5. Fulfillment of One Constituency One Ambulance promise

On page 119 under the National Health Improvement plan of the party’s 2016 manifesto, the party promised to strengthen the National Ambulance Service and ensure collaboration with NADMO.

This promise was awaken by the then abhorring situation of the national ambulance when there were only 50 ambulances serving Ghanaians nationwide. The president after hearing the situation charged the Minister in charge of the Special Development Initiative to immediately procure 300 ambulances to be distributed to all the 275 constituencies nationwide. This quick response from the President won him many praises from Ghanaians.

This massive achievement in the country’s health system development by the government will definitely receive some appreciations in terms of votes from Ghanaians in the upcoming elections.
