Apply to participate in Open17 Challenge on Climate Justice 2022 – $2,400 cash prize for 24 winners

Applications are open for the 2022 Open17 Challenge on Climate Justice. Take part in advancing climate justice. Do you have any ideas for addressing environmental or social justice issues caused by climate change? Pitch your innovative idea and stand the chance of winning a prize.

In addition to winning weekly cash prizes, you’ll have the chance to be directly coached by crowdsourcing experts to help your ideas come to life.

Here’s how to participate:

  • Pitch an idea or project that addresses climate justice in a 1-min video
  • Remember to use the hashtag #Open17ClimateJustice
  • To help you get started, you’ll find below a few suggestions for urgent climate justice issues.

Prizes up for grab

  • $2,400 cash pool will be given to each of the 24 prize winners, and the chance to join an international coaching program for the 50 most promising pitches. This program turns great ideas into practical crowdsourcing projects and teaches social innovation skills.
  • The top projects will have a chance to present in person to United Nations experts and potential investors at the Geneva Trialogue in Switzerland, in March 2023.

By participating in the challenge, you agree to be contacted by the University of Geneva regarding rewards and opportunities.

Here are some aspects of climate justice where UN experts say crowdsourced information is urgently needed:

  • Gathering information about participation of vulnerable groups in climate discussion and decision-making.
  • Assembling data about public services and government responsiveness for climate resilience.
  • Documenting the access of vulnerable communities and indigenous peoples to environmental justice.
  • Helping affected communities find relevant environmental information and counter misinformation.
  • Tracking the effects of climate change on regional conflict, human displacement, and resource insecurity, such as access to clean water.

Open17 Challenge on Climate Justice 2022 is a project supported by the European Commission, Yoma Operational Research, and Botnar Foundation.

  • The application deadline is 30th September 2022.
