Cameroon, February 3, 2024 – The government of Cameroon has officially launched the world’s first malaria vaccine rollout, a historic development that promises to revolutionize the approach to combating malaria on a global scale. The vaccine, known as RTS,S/AS01, has undergone rigorous testing and is proven to provide substantial protection against the malaria parasite.

Malaria remains a pervasive public health challenge, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where the majority of malaria-related deaths occur. The introduction of the malaria vaccine in Cameroon reflects a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to reduce the burden of this preventable and treatable disease.

The country hopes to vaccinate about 500, 000 children by 2025, and the rollout is part of a broader strategy to achieve the World Health Organization’s (WHO) goal of reducing malaria cases and deaths by at least 90% by 2030.

International health organizations and donors have praised Cameroon’s leadership in taking this groundbreaking step and expressed hope that the success of the malaria vaccine rollout will inspire other nations to follow suit.
