Human lives don’t matter to Akufo-Addo: The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi, has chastised the president for his decision to lift the restriction on movements in some parts of Ghana.

After a three-week partial lockdown in Accra, Kumasi, Kasoa, and Tema, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Sunday, April 19 withdrew the restrictions despite insisting “that lifting these restrictions does not mean we are letting our guard down”.

There has been mixed reaction over this decision as Ghana’s coronavirus case count has risen beyond 1,000 with less than 100 recoveries.

For Sammy Gyamfi, the decision by President Akufo-Addo was politically motivated.

Taking to his Facebook wall, the NDC Communications Officer said the president simply wants “to allow the EC the space to undertake its entrenched and illogical determination to compile a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections and nothing more”.

He argued that countries with far less numbers of confirmed cases have intensified their restrictions on movement.

“Yet, we who are currently the country with the highest COVID-19 cases in West Africa, have against expert advice, lifted our partial lockdown. Doesn’t this defy science and commonsense?” he wondered.

The NDC officer described the president’s decision as a “reckless political gamble that portends great danger for this nation”.

He rallied Ghanaians never to forgive President Akufo-Addo if his decision exacerbates the country’s situation.

“The blame for any fatality that is occasioned by this reckless decision must lie squarely with the President.

“What the President has essentially done, is to place political expediency ahead of public safety. And what that shows, is that human lives don’t matter to President Akufo-Addo.”
