The Asogli State, the Royal paramountcy of influential President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV yesterday demanded an ‘unqualified apology’ from National Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, over his comments in response to Togbe Afede and some well-meaning Ghanaians who questioned his purchase of 275 buses for his party.

We have attached a video segment of the Blay interview to this news story. Find it down below.

MyNewsGH.com reported how Togbe Afede waded into Freddie Blay’s 275 buses issues, bemoaning corruption in general in Ghana at a gathering of the National House of Chiefs.

The revered Volta Chief bemoaned the problem of corruption in Ghana both past and present and commended Martin Amidu, Special Prosecutor for turning his attention to the discourse.

But Freddie Blay didn’t take kindly to that:

“Maybe he (Afede) got his money from selling palmwine to get there” Freddie Blay jabbed Togbe Afede.

Mr Blay questioned Togbe Afede’s ‘understanding’ of issues saying “someone like Togbe Afede”, which was regarded derogatory by many.

Freddie Blay also said Ghanaians questioning the source of funding for the bus are “foolish”, “silly” and “have a mindset of poverty”, he told JoyNews Kojo Yankson in a video that has since gone viral on social media.

“Maybe he (Afede) got his money from selling palmwine to get there” Freddie Blay had said.

According to Freddie Blay, he is worried someone ‘like Togbe Afede has come in’, as he (Togbe Afede) is a businessman himself. He said Togbe Afede is ignorant of what he talking about.

“In his position as president of the House of Chiefs in this country, maybe from nowhere he has also risen to become a businessman. He has become a big businessman in this country. He has never asked for loans. Maybe he got his money from selling palmwine to get there” Freddie Blay jabbed.

He also said the following in response to queries about his source of wealth:

“It is a very foolish question for people to ask…”.

But the Asogli State is not taking the insults lightly, particularly those words directed at Togbe Afede, the man Mr Blay wonders whether he made his money from selling palmwine, as MyNewsGH.com reported.

A statement said they considered the comments from Blay “insulting” and “disrespectful”, and consequently, demanded an apology.

“The Asogli state council demands an unqualified apology from the NPP and its chairman for this their misconduct and disrespect shown to Togbe Afede with immediate effect.” The statement signed by the Secretary of the Asogli State said.

“Since the NPP remained silent, we can only conclude that this might be part of their boardroom decision.” He intimated.
