NDC won Election 2020

Singer, Belinda Nana Ekua Amoah, popularly known as Mzbel, has stated that recent development in Parliament is clear evidence that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the 2020 elections.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s Between Hours show with Naa Ashorkor, the ‘I am 16 years‘ hitmaker condemned the brawl in parliament in the run-up to the election of Speaker for the eighth parliament.

“I feel like our democracy has been thrown away somewhere because it is obvious and so clear that we (NDC) won the elections (2020). The presidential [election], especially we won but you see, I don’t know, I am not here for politics but we won,” Mzbel claimed.

She added: “And looking at what happened in parliament, it is clear that we won, but we all saw what happened in parliament, it confirms that we won.”

Mzbel, however, said the decision by the main opposition party to challenge the outcome of the polls in court is ideal, although she believes it will not change the verdict.

According to her, the NDC must work towards being extra vigilant in the next election.

Victory
The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, declared Akufo-Addo the winner of the 2020 presidential elections on 9 December 2020 after defeating John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress.

However, the minority NDC has since rejected the 2020 results, describing the election as full of irregularities in some parts of the country.

Chaos reigns
There was pandemonium in Ghana’s Parliament at dawn on Thursday as the House ushered in the eighth parliament, following the 7 December general election.

MPs-elect went berserk and held up proceedings for well over four hours before a new Speaker could be selected.

Tempers flared as the Clerk to Parliament, who was presiding over the voting exercise, initially ruled that the MP-elect for Assin North, James Gyekye Quayson (NDC), could not take part in the election, because of a court injunction.

This decision did not go down well with the National Democratic Congress MPs-elect, and pockets of shoving and pushing emerged in the chamber. The marshals of Parliament had a tough time restoring order in the House.

At one point, as the physical challenges ceased and counting of votes began, the MP-elect for Asawase in the Ashanti Region, Muntaka Mubarak (NDC), led a charge to snatch the ballot box. Other parliamentarians kicked over the voting booths. A melee ensued in the chamber, in the full glare of the public.

Armed military men had to intervene on the floor of the House to calm tempers, but this provoked the opposition MPs, who chanted patriotic songs and hooted at the security men to leave the House.

“We’ll resist oppressors’ rule … away!” the NDC MPs chanted.

After a while, the military had to leave the house. Once that was done, calm was restored.
