Start voter registration exercise in places not under lockdown – Lawyer Sam Okudzeto to EC

Sam Okudzeto, a senior legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association, has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to start the voters’ registration exercise in places outside the partial lockdown.

The Electoral Commission suspended its planned compilation of a new voters’ register over the ban on public gatherings imposed on Ghanaians as part of efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus disease that has bedeviled the country.

The exercise was initially scheduled for April 18, 2020, but no new date has been announced following the suspension.

The Greater Accra Metropolitan Area including Tema and Kasoa as well as the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area are currently under lockdown in a bid to check the spread of the disease.

The EC has said it wants to ensure that the voters’ register that will be used for the 2020 election is more credible and efficient than the existing one hence the need for a new Biometric Voter Management System (BVMS).

Sam Okudzeto, who is also a member of the Council of State, in an interview on Eyewitness News said the EC can compile the voters’ register in batches.

“Our cases of the Coronavirus is not as dramatic as it is in many countries which means that we only have few pockets in the two big municipalities and few of the smaller ones. So since the lockdown is not the whole of Ghana, the EC should start the registration in areas where there is no lockdown,” he said.

EC and the new voters’ registration

The Electoral Commission is supposed to organize the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7.

The Commission is seeking to replace its biometric machines to better address verification challenges that could occur during the elections.

A key new feature the EC cited is the introduction of a facial recognition option in addition to fingerprint verification.

It also plans to make the Ghana Card and passport the only acceptable identification for the upcoming voter registration, but the announcement was received with mixed reactions from Ghanaians.

Opposition to the new register

The move for the new register has been met with opposition from key political stakeholders, including the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The opposition party called on Ghanaians to reject the EC’s plans because it felt the commission was yet to present a compelling argument for the compilation of a new register.

Over the course of deliberations, its officials even walked out of a meeting with the EC

Akufo-Addo has become stubborn, he no longer listens to God – Prophet Owusu Bempah

Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah has disclosed that he no longer has a close relationship with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo because the president is no longer listening to God.

In an interview posted on the YouTube channel of RTV Ghana, the preacher is heard lamenting how Akufo-Addo’s countenance towards matters of God has dipped.

Asked whether he was mistaken to have backed the President spiritually in his days in opposition, Bempah insisted that he did what was told to him by God at the time.

He likened his current relationship with the president to that of Saul and Samuel in the Bible, positing that he was Samuel – a man simply directed by God to anoint His chosen one. While Akufo-Addo was Saul – the chosen one who disobeyed God and was visited with hard times.

“Samuel was asked to anoint Saul to become King, things did not go well, things went rough and that was because Saul became stubborn and was not listening to God and Samuel, so Samuel distanced himself from Saul.

“When Samuel tried to intervene at a point, God asked him to stay off because Saul had showed disobedience and so I see that the pure heart Akufo-Addo for which God chose him, has changed.

“He doesn’t listen to God anymore, and the prayers that clergymen used to say for him, he doesn’t allow it any longer. So, if you like him to Saul, it is the same thing, Samuel was only instructed by God to anoint Saul because he was God’s own choice,” Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah stressed.

It’s a done deal for NDC in 2024 if you go back to IMF – Kennedy Agyapong to NPP

Firebrand and a Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has gone haywire over the government’s decision to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warning of dire consequences for the party ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Without mincing words, the NPP financier explains after all the ‘noise’ he made against the Mahama government for lack of policy credit; the Akufo-Addo government is disappointing to him and many Ghanaians for following suit.

“It is just like handing over power to NDC without a contest, straight away because of the noise we made, and I chew my own words back when I said the NDC went to IMF because of mismanagement of the economy. So if NPP is going to IMF, what am I going to say?”, Ken Agyapong quizzed.

“So breaking the 8 is going to be tough, my message to you is simple, you cannot read my lips and I am not scared of anybody in the party, I will tell you the gospel truth, those who take you to IMF cannot break the 8,” he said this during a meeting with some NPP party members.

In a release issued on Friday, the Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah announced that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to commence official engagements with the International Monetary Fund for a financial bailout.
