These ManPower Capsules are dangerous to your health – FDA Warns

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has revoked the marketing authorization for the sale and distribution of six herbal medicinal products usually referred to as manpower drugs.

They are, Rockman Capsules manufactured by RockCare Clinic Limited; Mars for men imported by Joe D. Ventures and Tinatett Be4 Be4 Herbal Capsules manufactured by Tinattet Herbal Manufacturing and Marketing Co. Ltd.

The rest are, Angel Natural Capsules, manufactured by Angel Herbal Products Ltd.; Adom Gentleman Power Capsules manufactured by Dependable Pharmacy Ltd.; and Laud P Capsules manufactured by Stephen Gyan Herbal Centre.

A statement issued by the Authority said, the products were registered as herbal medicinal products indicated for male vitality but recent post-market surveillance activities conducted by the FDA revealed that the products have been adulterated with Vardenafil, a synthetic material used in the formulation of a prescription-only medicine used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

“It is important to indicate that adverse effects of Vardenafil may have serious health implications which include,” the statement signed by the FDA’s Chief Executive Mr Hudu Mogtari warned.

The statement said the component can lead to cerebrovascular haemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) which can lead to strokes; transient Ischaemic (heart) attack; palpitations and serious cardiovascular events including sudden cardiac death.

It can also cause priapism (sustained erection for long periods which can lead to impotence) as well as problems with kidney function, and problems with sight and hearing.

“The general public is therefore advised not to patronize the above listed herbal medicines. Meanwhile, the FDA is ensuring that the products are recalled from the market and the necessary regulatory actions applied”, the statement said.

It further maintained, “By this press release, all advertisements on the above-mentioned products must cease with immediate effect.”

Meet Nana Adwoa Takyi, the beautiful Ghanaian nurse who helped deliver a baby on a plane from Ghana to the US; About three weeks ago, news about a woman who went into labor on a plane from Ghana to the US caused a stir on the internet.

Everybody who heard the news was elated about how this miraculous event took place.

The woman was believed to have gone into labor a month earlier than the due date for delivery. She was at 36 weeks when she went into labor.

Fortunately, there was a registered nurse and a doctor on board who sprang into action to ensure a safe delivery aboard.

“When we realized that the mom-to-be was going to give birth on the 11-hour flight, the flight attendant had to clear the area after opening up the emergency kit due to turbulence, Takyi said in an interview with our Accra mail team.

“The mom-to-be was a little bit concerned, especially about the baby, and she was in a lot of pain asking if we could give her anything and we knew that wasn’t possible”.

The team was particularly concerned because we didn’t have all the medical equipment we needed for the delivery at our disposal but had to improvise with the resources available.

All the same, we had to resume attending to the mother because the baby’s head was showing. To God’s glory, we had an uneventful delivery. Mummy and baby are doing well”, the beautiful Ghanaian nurse concluded.

Nana Adwoa Takyi, together with Dr. Stephen Ansah- Addo who is also a Ghanaian and a flight attendant who happened to be a former nurse did all they could to make sure the delivery was successful and without any complications.

Nolan was the youngest passenger on board.

Know your genotype and its implications before you get married

Knowledge of Genotype has become one of the most discussed topics among people seeking to make life partners.

What then is Genotype?

According to the National Human Genome Research Institute, a genotype is an individual’s collection of genes. It defines two alleles inherited for a particular gene. The resulting phenotype (individual observable traits/features) is an expression of the genotype.

There are six (6) genotypes identified. They include;

A and S are traditionally considered normal and sickled alleles respectively. There is also a third allele C considered to be susceptible and it combines with normal allele A and sickle allele S to produce other genotypes.

AA is normal but susceptible to malaria, AS individuals are not severely debilitated, but they are resistant to malaria, SS individuals are severely affected and rarely survive to reproduce. AC is normal but susceptible to malaria, SC has mild anemia and CC is normal and resistant to malaria.

Sickle cell is a great concern to people as it presents different issues that can psychologically, socially, and economically affect individuals. It is therefore very important to understand your genotype and that of your partner before you decide on giving birth. People with sickle cell usually experience severe bodily pains where oxygen flow is compromised due to the blockage in the blood vessels.

The chart below explains the various genotypes and their combined effects. From the chart, it can be seen that people with AA genotype are safe to marry persons with any of the genotypes. With the exception of AA, the compatibility of AS, SS, and AC is very risky and therefore requires advice from health professionals.
