Mahama started free SHS with Over 365,000 beneficiaries – Sammy Gyamfi

Mahama started free SHS: National Communication Officer of opposition National Democratic Congress ( NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has revealed that under John Mahama’s presidency the implementation of the Free Senior High School( SHS) policy began.

According to the eloquent lawyer, over 365,000 day students of the 2015/2016 batch enjoyed free SHS under John Mahama’s regime.

Speaking at an NDC Town Hall Meeting in London on Saturday, the Communications Officer noted that the NDC needed to let Ghanaians know that free SHS began under Mahama and not President Akufo-Addo.

“We need to let Ghanaians understand that President Akufo-Addo was NOT the one who commenced the implementation of free SHS; over 365, 000 day students under the Mahama regime were given free SHS. We were the one who captured the essence of article 25 clause 1(d) of the 1992 Constitution,” he claimed.

He then went on to accuse the Akufo-Addo Presidency of hastily implementing the programme which they had begun in a more sustainable, well-laid-out manner.

“…we started with day students as it pertains in the United Kingdom and we were going to roll it to cover boarding students. You have come and you’re implementing it in a haphazard way. Look at what happened at the Independence Square a few days ago with thousands of secondary school children gathered there; JHS graduates, in this day and age of technology, struggling to resolve their placement,” he complained.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaigned heavily on the Free SHS policy prior to assuming the reins of power in 2017. The NPP began its implementation of it in September 2017.

The free SHS policy continues to be a major campaign message for the NPP; it is frequently being trumpeted as a bold, relieving, and life-changing policy.
