NPP backs call for Parliament recall over cocaine seizures

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has backed calls for Parliament to be recalled to consider recent cocaine seizures linked to Ghana and to establish a bipartisan inquiry into the cases.

NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye said the scale of the reported seizures required Parliament to reconvene rather than wait for the normal parliamentary calendar.

According to him, the cases involve cocaine consignments reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars and references to Ghana in charge sheets in foreign jurisdictions.

Mr Boakye said Parliament has a constitutional responsibility to hold the Executive to account and argued that the House should be in session to examine the matter.

The NPP is calling for a special bipartisan committee comprising members from both sides of Parliament. The proposed committee, according to the party, should be able to summon witnesses, request documents and conduct its proceedings publicly.

The call follows heightened political debate over recent narcotics investigations and seizures. The NPP says a parliamentary inquiry would provide an avenue for the issues to be examined through a formal legislative process.
