US Supreme Court asked to review detention case involving Georgetown scholar

The Trump administration has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a case involving Georgetown University scholar Badar Khan Suri, whose detention by immigration authorities followed his public advocacy for Palestinian rights.

Reuters reports that the Justice Department is challenging a lower-court decision that resulted in Suri’s release. The administration argues that federal immigration law limits the ability of federal courts to intervene in certain detention proceedings.

Suri, an Indian citizen and postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown, was detained in March 2025 and released in May 2025 after a federal judge found that he was likely to succeed in arguing that his arrest violated constitutional protections.

The case is being watched by universities and immigration advocates because it concerns the interaction between immigration enforcement, detention and constitutional claims involving speech.

The Supreme Court has not yet ruled on whether it will hear the case.
