Nigeria probes deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in custody

Nigerian authorities are investigating the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Minna, Niger State. Reuters reported that survivors alleged guards sprayed an unidentified substance into an overcrowded cell before detainees developed breathing difficulties and collapsed. The government has ordered an investigation and suspended several senior NSCDC officials. The cause of death has not been definitively established.
