Mahama: Africa will no longer export raw minerals without value addition

President John Dramani Mahama has said Africa should capture more economic value from its critical minerals by processing them locally rather than continuing to export raw materials.

Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24, Mahama said the global transition to green energy was increasing demand for Africa’s critical minerals. He said African countries should use that demand to support industrialisation, job creation and stronger local value chains.

The President said Ghana and other African countries needed to build industries around natural resources and make greater use of the African Continental Free Trade Area to expand intra-African trade.

He also argued that the continent’s economic transformation would require stronger cooperation among African countries and investment that supports domestic production and employment.
