Mahama demands permanent UN Security Council seat for Africa

President John Dramani Mahama has renewed Ghana’s call for permanent African representation on the United Nations Security Council.

Addressing the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Mahama said Africa’s population and role in international affairs justified a stronger voice in the Council’s decision-making structure.

He called for permanent African representation with the full rights and responsibilities attached to such membership, including veto powers. He argued that the existing structure reflects geopolitical realities from the period after the Second World War.

The President said reform of the Security Council should form part of wider efforts to strengthen confidence in multilateral institutions.
