Mahama calls for structural repair after UN slavery resolution

President John Dramani Mahama has called for further international action following the adoption of a Ghana-led UN resolution recognising the trafficking and enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.

Speaking on the margins of the 81st UN General Assembly, Mahama said acknowledgement of the historical injustice should be followed by measures addressing its continuing economic and structural consequences.

He pointed to international trade, financing, resource extraction, debt and value addition as areas where reforms could affect Africa’s economic position.

Ghana has also been advocating mechanisms for the return and restitution of African cultural property and human remains held outside the continent.
