Black Stars lose 2-0 to Ivory Coast in opening AFCON 2027 qualifier

Ghana’s Black Stars opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on Thursday.

Malick Yalcouye opened the scoring with a powerful effort before Franck Kessie doubled the hosts’ advantage from the penalty spot in the second half.

The result leaves Ghana at the bottom of Group C ahead of the meeting between The Gambia and Somalia.

Ghana struggled to create clear chances and were without several key players because of injuries, including Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Kudus and Thomas Partey.

The Black Stars will next face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29.
