Leila Djansi challenges African churches to invest more in hospitals and medical research

Ghanaian-American filmmaker Leila Jewel Djansi has sparked discussion after questioning why wealthy African churches continue to invest heavily in religious infrastructure while many Africans travel abroad for specialised medical treatment.

In a Facebook post reported by Graphic Showbiz, Djansi argued that more resources could be directed towards hospitals, medical research, rehabilitation centres and other health infrastructure.

She contrasted the strong emphasis on prayer and religious giving with the reality that many patients seek advanced treatment outside Africa when they need specialist care.

Djansi also referred to stroke and cancer treatment, using examples of medical facilities and treatment systems outside Ghana to make a broader point about the need for investment in healthcare and research capacity.

Her comments have generated discussion online about the relationship between faith, healthcare investment and the responsibility of institutions with significant financial resources.
