King Sunny Ade celebrates 80th birthday after six decades in music

Nigerian juju music legend King Sunny Ade has marked his 80th birthday, celebrating more than six decades of influence on Nigerian and international music.

Born Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye on September 22, 1946, the musician has spent much of his career developing and popularising modern juju music, particularly through his use of electric instrumentation, large ensembles and choreographed performances.

Channels Television noted that his career helped transform juju performances into high-energy stage productions. His work has also earned international recognition, including two Grammy nominations.

King Sunny Ade’s music has been closely associated with Nigerian and Yoruba cultural celebrations for generations, giving him a distinctive place in the country’s musical history.

His 80th birthday has prompted fresh attention to a career that has connected traditional Nigerian sounds with international audiences for decades.
