Fund Accra-Kumasi Expressway with private capital, not state funds — Alan Kyerematen urges gov’t

Former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has called for private-sector financing of the proposed US$4 billion Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

Speaking at a public lecture in Accra, Kyerematen argued that government could use private capital for commercially viable infrastructure projects instead of committing scarce public resources.

He said investors could provide the financing and recover their investment through revenue generated by the project. The proposal comes as government pursues funding arrangements for the major road corridor.

The Accra-Kumasi route is a key transport link between Ghana’s capital and the Ashanti Region and has long been associated with discussions about congestion, travel time and infrastructure investment.
