Mahama calls for climate finance to come as grants, not loans

President John Dramani Mahama has called for climate finance to be provided to vulnerable countries mainly through grants rather than additional debt.

Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Mahama linked climate finance to the ability of developing countries to respond to climate-related disasters and invest in resilience.

He pointed to Ghana’s experience with climate-related challenges and argued that financing arrangements should take into account the unequal burdens faced by countries that contribute relatively little to global emissions.

Mahama’s remarks formed part of Ghana’s wider presentation at the UN on climate action, development finance and global cooperation.

The issue remains part of broader international discussions over how climate finance should be mobilised and delivered to developing countries.
