Mahama warns against weaponising identity to fuel exclusion and conflict

President John Dramani Mahama has warned against the weaponisation of national, ethnic and cultural identity, saying identity can become a source of conflict when it is used to exclude people considered different.

Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Mahama reflected on Ghana’s multicultural character and said belonging can provide dignity and connection while also being manipulated for political purposes.

He cautioned that such manipulation can contribute to discrimination, displacement, nativism, xenophobia and conflict.

Mahama said the founding principle of the United Nations should remain recognition of every person as part of one human family regardless of race, religion, language, skin colour or nationality.

He urged the international community to apply that principle when responding to refugees, migrants, victims of conflict and marginalised communities.
