Mahama unveils three-pillar global plan for reparatory justice at UNGA

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a three-pillar framework aimed at moving the global reparatory justice conversation from acknowledgement towards implementation.

The framework, presented at a high-level side event on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, focuses on strengthening voluntary restitution and international cooperation, establishing permanent legal and diplomatic mechanisms for provenance research and restitution, and investing in Africa’s cultural infrastructure.

Mahama said the initiative is intended to support the return of African cultural heritage and strengthen museums, archives, conservation facilities and related skills on the continent.
