Manasseh on 2020 SONA: Galamsey fight a failure, corruption worse under Akufo-Addo

Fearless investigative journalist and anti-corruption campaigner, Manasseh Azure Awuni has given his true state of the nation address ahead of the President’s presentation in Parliament later today, stating that the fight against illegal mining has failed and corruption under Akufo-Addo is much worse than it was under President John Mahama.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to present a state of the nation address to Parliament today in fulfillment of his constitutional obligation as President. The presentation is expected to cover every aspect of the country, from security to education.

But even before he presents, Mr. Awuni has given his verdict on things most pressing to him: the galamsey fight and corruption.

On these two indicators, he argues that the government has failed to meet expectations, insisting that the failure in the galamsey fight has been caused by corruption, which is much worse in reality that even in perception.

“A serious threat to our environment and the nation’s water supply, for which President Akufo-Addo put his presidency on the line — the fight against illegal mining — has failed monumentally due to systemic and endemic CORRUPTION by his party and government officials.

Interestingly, Nana Akufo-Addo campaigned on the biggest problem of this nation, which is corruption. He won because his predecessor presided over a corrupt regime. Ironically, but not shockingly now, Akufo-Addo’s BEST performance in the Corruption Perception Index is worse than his predecessor’s WORST performance. His ranking on the Corruption Reality Index will obviously be worse,” he stated on social media.

For given the spare of corruption it seems unsustainable to continue to argue that the President is not corrupt, or is incorruptible.

“In all of this, can we say the president, the Chief Clearing Agent, is not corrupt or dislikes corruption? This is a difficult question, so we will need our wise elders to tell us what they meant when they said, “An elder who sits at home and watches children eat the python will not be left out when the roll call of python eaters is conducted,” he posited.

The galamsey fight

To save the environment from the devastation occasioned by illegal mining, President Nana Akufo-Addo set up an Operation Vanguard team in 2017 to rid the country of illegal mining.

But three years on, illegal mining has intensified while members of the ruling party have been implicated in the release of seized excavators to other party members or back to the illegal miners for illegal mining to continue.
